About the author

​Shena Mackay was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. She is the author of two novellas, four collections of short stories, and ten novels. Her novel Dunedin (Vintage) and the collection of short stories, TheLaughing Academy (William Heinemann), both won Scottish Arts Council Book Awards, and the bestselling The Orchard on Fire (Vintage) was shortlisted for the 1996 Booker Prize and the McVitie’s Prize. Her most recent short story collection, The Atmospheric Railway (Jonathan Cape), was published to great critical acclaim in 2008. She lives in Southampton, England.
