Tseng Kwong Chi

 

About the author

Tseng Kwong Chi (1950–1990) was a photographer and performer. A documentarian of New York City’s 1980s art scene, he was also known for East Meets West, his expeditionary self-portrait series in which he assumed an invented persona, a Chinese “Ambiguous Ambassador,” in iconic architectural settings and national landmarks. His work is in the collections of the Guggenheim Museum and the San Francisco Museum of Art. He died at thirty-nine from complications related to AIDS.
