About the author
Joseph Yoakum (1890–1972) was a self-taught American artist of landscapes that blended imagination with real-life experience. He traveled the world widely, leaving home at age nine to join the Great Wallace Circus. In the late 1920s, he settled in Chicago, but did not begin drawing until 1962. His work is held in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Smithsonian Institute, and the Menil Collection, among others.
