About the author
Paul McCarthy is a professor of comparative culture at Surugadai University, Saitama, Japan. He has translated three books by Junichiro Tanizaki: Childhood, A Cat, a Man, and Two Women, and The Gourmet Club, all published by Kodansha International. A volume of interrelated short stories by Kanai Mieko, Word Book, is forthcoming from Dalkey Archives, as is a volume of stories, The Disciple (forthcoming from Autumn Hill), from which “Li Ling” is taken. He is currently working on an anthology of modern Japanese poetry, and a multi-volume historical novel about the Russo-Japanese War by Shiba Ryotaro.
