“No Such Thing as Repetition”: The Poetics of Repetition
In “Portraits and Repetitions,” Gertrude Stein asks: “A thing that seems to be exactly the same thing may seem to be a repetition but is it.” Incantation, memory aid, compulsion, patterning device—just what is repetition and how does it work? Does it harmonize or disrupt meaning? What does it entail when it’s a narrative conceit or takes the form of an artistic reenactment? In this Master Class we will study different manifestations of repetition and explore a range of its uses and effects in a selection of poems, prose excerpts, and artworks. We will look at writing by authors such as Stein, Samuel Beckett, Joe Brainard, Jorge Luis Borges, João Cabral de Melo Neto, Federico García Lorca, Ana Hatherly, Harryette Mullen, Lisa Robertson, María Sabina, Wallace Stevens, Tom McCarthy, Norman Pritchard, Raymond Queneau, and Anne Waldman and also consider art dealing with repetition’s multiple valences by artists Rineke Dijkstra, Ragnar Kjartansoon, and Elaine Sturtevant. Together we will explore ways our own writing can make “something new of repetition itself.”
