Narrating Contested Space
This class will focus on the challenge of capturing scene when the physical space or events of the story are experienced in varied and sometimes contradictory ways by the characters. We will think specifically about the project of writing about cities and city space. Ho w do writers approach moments that are both singular and collective, giving them appropriate grounding and specificity, while gesturing toward the role of such moments in a larger, less coherent narrative? We’ll think about how choices in structure and point of view can direct the reader to multiple experiences at once, looking at examples of polyphony, omniscience, future tense, dual perspective, first person plural, and the second person.
